A lava worm is a recently discovered species that live in the outer fringes of the earth's core. The first specimen was discovered when the Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3 breached a small lava channel branching upwards and a lava worm wriggled into the gap. It took 12 separate scientists to confirm it was a new species and not an internet hoax. The tunnel was later sealed off in the name of conservation.

Protecting their young |
Low numbers |
Lava worms are a rare and shy species, and are very protective of their young. Do not try to take a baby lava worm from its mother. Ever.

Lava worms have a very sensitive skin, and molten plastic irritates them. Did you know, 10% of all dropped chip packets and wrappers will find their way to the earth's core within 10 years? Please, next time you are going to drop a chip packet instead of putting it in the bin, think of the lava worms.
